The late great Yaffa Cafe was the epicenter of my mythic sense of New York. Even the fact that it seemed to have always been past its heyday was fascinating to me. I discovered it as a teenager when I couldn't seem to find the cool spots so I picked out a cognizant looking couple and followed them to see what underground place they might lead me to. I trailed them down these stairs into a dim densely decorated establishment that was kitschy but also genuinely beautiful, with plastic grapes hanging from the ceiling, a picture of Scarlet O'hara in a gilded frame, and restrooms labeled with nothing more than a pink dot on one door and a blue dot on the other. It was also an inter-dimensional portal as my brother and I discovered when, on separate occasions, we both ran into our most serious high school crushes from out of state there. It closed a couple of years ago. I think it imploded like the house in Poltergeist. Last I heard there was a Google add where the iconic Yaffa sign used to be.
